RELEASED: December 22, 2024

The holiday spirit was in full swing as we tackled the creation of our music video for Last Christmas. This one was a bit rushed after Halloween because we wanted to have it in time for the holiday season, and lot of our energy was put into the arrangement..  From location scouting to braving the chilly weather, here's a behind-the-scenes look at what went into making this cozy winter video.

Getting in the mood

To dive into the vibe of Last Christmas, Sivan watched the Wham! documentary. It definitely helped set the tone for the project for her and inspired us to lean into the nostalgic holiday spirit. Meanwhile Farrah started looking at her neighborhood with different eyes… where were the pine trees, and could we shoot in them?  From there, we started planning everything—including finding the perfect location.

Our Arrangement

This was the first video where we did our own arrangement. We wanted a chill, forest picnic kind of vibe, and we think we accomplished that.  It definitely has a very different feel than the original.  A big shout out to Boris here, who offered guidance! It was a really fun learning process and we look forward to doing more!

The Cajon Next Door

We spent a couple of weeks trying to find a used cajon nearby.  All of the listings were at least an hour away, or the post creator never responded.  We almost bought a new one, but in the end, Sivan’s neighbor Max, who works for Remo, had one sitting in his house.  He had joined us one day to listen to us practice ghostbusters and was happy to donate to the cause.

Pine trees, where are you?

Location scouting took a couple of weeks. We all agreed that we needed a pine forest (or at least the look of one) for this video.  We initially scoped out local hiking trails and landscaped pines but quickly realized that they were surprisingly hard to come by in our area. Almost settling for oak trees, we debated heading up to Pine Mountain for a cozy night at an A-frame cabin. However, we worried about the late check-in time as well as freezing up there while trying to shoot outdoors. Ultimately, we found the perfect spot in Spunky Canyon near Green Valley. The elevation wasn't too high, so the temperatures were reasonable (and northerners would probably have been laughing at us), but it was brisk enough to freeze our So-Cal butts off!

Styling and Props

Marina was beyond thrilled about the holiday sweaters, cozy hats, and hot chocolate picnic vibes. We put together a color scheme and pulled most of the props from our own collections or borrowed from friends (thank you Nick for the lanterns!  He even drove them over on thanksgiving morning before heading out of town to see his family!).. We did order a few key items, like string lights and a tablecloth that doubled as our picnic blanket.

On the day of the shoot, Farrah and Sivan showed up wearing nearly identical outfits—oops! We considered having one of them change, but with the cold pressing down on us, we decided to just roll with it. It turns out that the colder you get, the less you care about such things!

Marina had gone shopping for Christmas cookies, chocolate, and even made a thermos of hot chocolate to add to our picnic.  We used the tree ring from Wellerman as a charcuterie board and made a really cute picnic of sweets.  We even sat around our cute set eating all the goodies and hanging out under the lights after our shoot… did you know that gingerbread men have light-saber battles with Pirouline? lol)

Braving the Cold

Marina was our unofficial "warmth enforcer," making sure everyone was bundled up in jackets between takes and handing everyone hot cocoa. Farrah, meanwhile, was losing hand warmers left and right—she kept putting them in pockets, but they kept magically disappearing. Later she figured out that her hands were so numb that she just couldn’t feel them in there! Let’s just say it’s a good thing we didn’t opt for Pine Mountain. Even at Spunky Canyon, numb fingers made ukulele playing a bit of a challenge!

Racing Against the Clock

By the time we had everything set up, we had less than an hour to film—our shortest shooting window yet.. If only we could pause the sun!  Shooting in studio really has its benefits.

Despite the challenges, this video was a labor of love.  We learned a lot, and look forward to the next one! We hope you enjoy it!
